About Lou’s Studio

I want your class to be enjoyable, a casual place for you to grow and succeed! My area of specialty is Commercial voice, with a focus on musical theatre.  I come from a classical background and training in acting, voice, violin, and ballet, yet I have spent my life as a musical theatre performer, commercial voice actor/singer and a musical theatre voice specialist. I have trained as a bel canto singer, as well as training in the contemporary voice world, specifically pop singing, and belting for musical theatre. This journey has meant that I have spent a good deal of time in NYC studying, and watching, listening and learning, to be able to be as well rounded and specific as I can be about contemporary voice.  I am encyclopedic about, and have a passion for musical theatre. In my studio we will focus on the technique of singing properly.  The importance of a well balanced voice, easy registration changes, and a well supported sound that is flexible and healthy.  I also focus on accuracy, ear training, theory, and the technical requirements involved in being a well rounded musician.  I specialize in repertoire selection, storytelling, acting and performance.   I will expect you to work at your technique in class and out, applying it to your material.  Proper technique is the foundation of a good voice and a long career.I have been working in the college and university theatre programs since 1997, and I have been adjudicating auditions for these schools for even longer.  This has helped me to be very knowledgable about what is expected of a potential candidate who is auditioning for a performance program.

Testimonials

In all my years as a voice teacher I have known only three ‘born voice teachers’ Louisa is at the top of that list. She has an insatiable thirst for knowledge as well as a curiosity about how the voice works.  In short, she never stops learning. With her bright personality and genuine love of her craft, she has inspired a generation of vocal students here in Canada, in the United States, and even Mexico City and Monterey. George Brown College recognized her as one of it’s top 20 Faculty members. She was recognized for making a significant contribution to excellence in teaching and learning.

As a voice teacher I have had the pleasure of working with Louisa Burgess-Corbett on numerous occasions and witnessing her work with my students as well as the students of other teachers. In my opinion, Louisa is one of the finest musical theatre voice teachers and coaches currently in Canada.  She strives to incorporate the most current methods and techniques to help mold young performers to be both knowledgable and marketable.
